Results of the 2013 Sonot Kkaazoot have been posted on the Sonot Website.

The NSCF has participated in many joint projects with the FNSB and Fort Wainwright over the past 40 years. To our credit, these efforts have resulted in continual improvements to the facilities, trails and equipment at the Birch Hill complex. Projects require funding and those dollars come through our efforts to secure grants and donations from both the public and private sectors in Alaska.

This year the NSCF is asking the State of Alaska for FY2014 capital budget grants totaling $4.5M. These funds would be used for:

• Trail system, equipment and building maintenance and upgrades.
• New building construction and old building removal.

Several of the upgrades are important for hosting the upcoming Arctic Winter Games in March of 2014. The Alaska Legislature is currently prioritizing FY2014 capital budget project funding requests, and important decisions will be made by the middle to end of next week (March 20-22) regarding projects to be funded. Showing local support is an important part of the legislative decision making process.  We urge you to contact the Interior Delegation as soon as possible to let them know your support for these projects. Version 1.6 of the Birch Hill iPhone App was released on the App Store today. This version includes several improvements to the user interface, as well as more robust and reliable connectivity. Trails, forecast and news now display in tables and in iOS can be refreshed using standard pull-to-refresh functionality. A settings page has been added, and users can even choose between dark and light backgrounds. This version requires a minimum of iOS 5.1 and features full support for the iPhone 5.

Look for a universal iPhone/iPad version of the App soon. This will feature some groovy new functionality especially for the iPad. And Android users don't despair! An Android version is in the works ... stay tuned ...

We are excited that our grooming equipment has made an incredible jump in caliber with the purchase of our PistenBully last spring and we are continually providing the best ski trails for you and your family to ski on of all levels recreation to racing!  The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks raises funds to pay the costs of trail construction and year-round trail maintenance on the 40Km (8Km of lighted trails) the Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails at Birch Hill Recreation Area. Your donations make it possible to continue to provide the high quality trails we have all become accustomed to. Trail donations are tax deductible (NSCF 501(c)(3) Tax ID # 92-0096061. Jr Nordics

NSCF Junior Nordics provides an opportunity for children to enjoy the Fairbanks winter while learning the sport of cross country skiing. Children ages 6 to 14 of all abilities are welcome to join and learn a sport they can pursue for a lifetime. The emphasis is on fun, fitness, and learning proper technique.

NSCF Junior Nordics skiers receive instruction in both classical and skate techniques from enthusiastic and dedicated coaches. Skiers learn proper care and handling of equipment, trail etiquette, good sportsmanship and how to act responsibly in the outdoors. A typical practice session will include a warm-up period, a lesson in a technique and appropriate length group ski on the trails, ending with a fun activity.

Winter Sessions (I & II):
Session I (Nov 8 – Dec 20) Offering Tuesdays 6:30-7:30PM, Thursdays 6:30-7:30PM & Sundays 2-3PM
Session II (Jan 13 – Feb 28) Offering Tuesdays 6:30-7:30PM, Thursdays 6:30-7:30PM & Sundays 2-3PM

Spring Session (III):
Session III (March 19 – April 4) 3 weeks (2 times a week) both Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:30-7:30PM

Open house meetings for public comments regarding parking improvements for the Birch Hill Recreation Area (BHRA) will be held from 4:30PM to 6:30PM on Tuesday, August 7th  at the Door of Hope Church, 270 Fairhill Road (formerly Lighthouse Christian School), and Wednesday, August 8th in the Assembly Chambers in the Fairbanks North Star Borough Office Building.  Please make an effort to attend and provide your input.

Application and scholarship forms for 2012-3 programs – including year-round and summer Comp Team programs, and our Prep/Devo summer program – are now online on the NSCF website.  www.nscfairbanks.org Click on ‘downloads’ and ‘forms’ then order by ‘date’ and they should be among the first items visible.  Waivers and online registration will be updated and available within the next few weeks.  Information about our programs has been updated under the 'FXC' tab on the main menu.

We are waiting patiently for snow and when it comes our hardworking NSCF Groomers will be out on the trails making those few inches = PERFECTLY groomed trails.  If you haven’t done so yet this year - Don’t forget to donate to our Trail Grooming Fund.  Bottom Line = Great Grooming Costs Money!!!!
