The racing season is almost here. The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks race calendar comes to life with a pair of races on the weekend of November 21-22 at Birch Hill.
The Flint Hills Resources Alaska Town Race Series - the 14th Annual series, if you can believe it - starts off the calendar with the annual Fairbanks Youth Sports Season Opener on Saturday, the 21st. The race will have mass starts for all classes, and all classes will use free technique.
This event will probably see the biggest field of the year at Birch Hill. Last year there were more than 400 entries, thanks to visiting skiers from several Mat-Su High Schools and a concurrent USSA National Ranking List points race. Both the high school/adult women's field and the high school/adult men's field should see more than 100 skiers on the line.
On Sunday, the 22nd, there will be a second USSA National Ranking Lists points race for those skiers who are interested in earning better points to help their seeding at US Nationals and USSA Junior Olympics. These races will be in interval start format in classic technique.
The following Friday will be the (approximately) 44th annual Turkey Day Relays, sponsored by Beaver Sports. Once again we are looking forward to more than 300 skiers in this event.
The Flint Hills Resources Alaska Town Race Series resumes on December 5 with the Fairbanks Youth Sports Classic Sprint, which will feature "A" and "B" elimination brackets for the high school/adult class, and a shorter elimination bracket for master (40+) men, if there are sufficient entries. Alaska Nanook skiers will not be in attendance, as they will be competing at the Alaska Nordic Cup event in Anchorage that weekend, taking on the UAA Seawolves.
Eight days after the second Town Race is the first event in the Chest Medicine Fairbanks Distance Series, presented by Raven Cross Country. This is the 12th consecutive year of this series. The first race in the series will be a 15km mass start free technique event, with a 7.5Km option for those wanting to race over a shorter distance.
The weekend of December 19-20 will see the opening events in the annual Besh Cup Junior Olympic Qualifying series. Saturday's race is a free technique sprint at Kincaid Park, and Sunday's is an interval start classic event at Chugiak. See the Cross Country Alaska website (www.crosscountryalaska.org) for more information.
The final NSCF event of calendar 2009 is the annual Ski Your Age in Kilometers event. This event, which has grown in interest, participants and total kilometers skied each year since its inception, is designed to give participants a way to ski off their extra holiday season kilometers, to share the bounty of their Christmas dinners (by bringing leftovers to the Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center), and to support FXC through their donations. FXC organizes the event, one of the only non-competitive, on-skis events on our calendar. Come and enjoy a great time.
