Wedgewood Resort US Championships Kick Off Tuesday PDF Print E-mail

The Wedgewood Resort US Cross Country Ski Championships, the biggest week of racing in Fairbanks since the 1984 FIS Men's World Cup races, kick of Tuesday evening with the Yukon Title Company 5Km/10Km Interval Start Classic event at 6:00PM on the Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails at Birch Hill Recreation Area.

Follow the races by going to the event website:  www.ussadistancenationals.org .  All entry and start lists, results, etc. are available at this website.

Volunteers Needed for US Cross Country Championships PDF Print E-mail

Hi "Volunteers"!

NEXT WEEK the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks will host the biggest race series that has been held here in 25 years.  The US Cross Country Ski Championships will begin on Tuesday, March 24th at 6 pm with the first of four races to be held here at the Jim Whisenhant Trails at Birch Hill.  This will be a US National Championship for cross country skiers and we are honored to be the host this year.

2009 Sonot Kaazoot Results PDF Print E-mail

Under sunny skies Tyson and Davya Flaharty dominated their respective fields in the 2009 Sonot Kaazoot.  While it is suspected that the Race Director somehow created an advantage for the pair no evidence could be found.   The snow was slow and the temperatures brisk, but the trails were in fine form for this years event.  Everyone is looking forward to the use of the new trail down the ski slope and skiing on the river next year.  Results can be found at the downloads/results section of the website.

Sonot Kaazoot Update! PDF Print E-mail

Our illustrious Race Director (aka Bad Bob Baker) has determined that river conditions are not safe for running the race from Denali State Bank up to Birch Hill.  The 20 and 50km races (with a little shortening) will be held entirely at Birch Hill.  The start time is moved to 10:30am.

 Remember that bib pick-up is at Pioneer Park from 5-7pm on Thursday, March 12.

 It is disapointing to all of us not to be on the river but between the overflow and several thin ice sections it is not safe.

Sonot Kkaazoot Trail Information PDF Print E-mail

The race director and grooming crew have done a full reconaissance of the Sonot course and we are anticipating using the traditional start at the Cushman Street Bridge.  There will be one major change in the course this year, however.  A new route is going to be used to get from the river to the Jim Whisenhant trail system.  The route will follow the east side of the Birch Hill Ski Area access road and then use an existing trail that switchbacks up the hill east of the ski hill.  The new trail joins the White Bear at the same location (Sonot cut-off).  Grooming is in progress on this new section of trail so please hold off skiing it.  The new trail is slated to become a permanent route and does require summer dozer work which is scheduled for next summer.  Keep tuned to the NSCF website for further trail condition updates.  We hope to open the new trail for training sometime next week.
