The "Old Schoolers" team of Pete Leonard, Mike Kramer and Marius Korthauer teamed up to win the 44th Annual Turkey Day Relays, sponsored by Beavers Sports  Saturday at Birch Hill.  With a heat wave taking the temperature up to +33.5F/+1C, the participants had a rare opportunity to enjoy warm conditions for this long-standing race.

Logan Hanneman of the BeeGees won the first leg, coming in 32 seconds ahead of Schauer Pauer's Karl Schauer, a UAA skier.  Leonard was third at the tag, six seconds behind Schauer.  On the second leg the BeeGees' Patrick Nugent held the lead pretty steady over the Old Schoolers, giving up only two seconds of their 38-second lead.  Karl Schauer's dad John skied the middle, or "rocking chair" leg, and faded pretty quickly out of the top group.

2008 NCAA Champion Marius Korthauer was skiing anchor for the Old Schoolers and he was able to reel in BeeGees' anchor leg Kip Wilkinson, eliminating the 36-second deficit and coming in a minute-and-a-half clear.  The BeeGees were second, more than a minute-and-a-half clear of the third-place Weekend Warriors (Nick Ferree, Kelsey Boyer and Eric Hoffman).

Will Coleman fastest anchor leg time pulled the Mo' Mojo Than Yo' squad (Gerry Hovda, Mark Ross, Coleman) from seventh to fourth.  The "Manwich" - Vanya Ribkin, Neill Toelle and James Leder - were fifth.  Paul Schauer, the anchor leg on Schauer Pauer matched his brother Karl's rank of second fastest on his leg, (third leg) but could only pull the team up into 8th place.

The first finisher on the women's side was Melissa Lewis who skied all three legs.  Her time of 46:42 was good for 9th overall, and was four-and-a-half minutes faster than that of Team Turbo Turkey: Lisa Beattie, Heather Best, Karin Gillis, who were 17th overall.  The third-place team for the women was Brandy Reeves, Gina Baker and Davya Flaharty, the Swiss Misses, who were only 20 seconds behind the Turbo Turkeys.

For the women, Lewis had the fastest time on each leg.  On the first leg Lisa Beattie was second-fastest woman, Elizabeth Whisenhant third and Megan Edic fourth.  Behind Lewis on the second leg were Gina Baker, Jane Leblond and Heather Best.  On the final leg, Davya Flaharty (2nd), Karin Gillis (3rd) and Ema Mayo (4th) tried in vain to keep pace with Lewis.

In the 3x1Km race (Grades K-1-2 and Grades 3-4) the Arctic Cheetahs, Amber Hajdukovich, Van Levey and Kent Yoshikawa, made mincemeat of the competition, recording the fastest time of the four classes racing that distance.

In the Grade 5-6 and Grade 7-8 3x2Km Race the Too Fast To Freeze team of Joe Bue, Jonathan Koenig and Max Donaldson won comfortably.

98 Teams finished the race, one of the biggest fields in the last several years.  We'd like to thank all the volunteers who came out and made the race possible.
