Flaharties Flog Fields in Distance Series #2 PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 10 January 2010
Tyson and Davya Flaharty were the fastest couple in the race, and the fastest at 20K for their respective genders in Sunday's second event in the Chest Medicine Fairbanks Distance Series, presented by Raven Cross Country.  A total of 46 skiers started and 44 of them finished in temperatures around -15F.

Tyson Flaharty had rested the day of the 30Km at US Championships in Anchorage, so wanted a hard distance effort.

He pulled away to an early lead and at the finish had a margin of 7:14 on second-place Dave Edic.  Edic in turn was nearly 6 minutes ahead of third place Max Kaufman, who had kept pace with Edic for most of the first 10Km loop.  Joel Buth (4th) and Josh Snow (5th) gained on Kaufman throughout the second lap, but couldn't catch him.

Davya Flaharty won the women's 20K by just short of three minutes over Melissa Lewis, who is more of a skater than a classic skier.  Ten minutes after Lewis finished, Jane LeBlond crossed the line in third place.  Mary Brunner was fourth and MK Romberg fifth.

Krista Heeringa was the fastest 10K woman (38:16) by 1:37 over Karin Gillis.  Lisa Drucken Miller, Corrine Leistikow and Cathy Weeg place 3-4-5 for women.  Heeringa and Gillis were the two fastest 10K skiers among all entrants, men and women.  In the men's 10K race, Gary Knuepfer topped double-poling dervish Bill Husby 40:22 to 47:00.

The next NSCF event is the third race in the Flint Hills Resources Town Race Series, the Woolly Rhino Classic, scheduled for Saturday, the 16th at 11AM.  This will be a classic-technique race for all classes.  Elementary classes will mass-start; junior high and the high school/adult classes will race in interval start format.

The final race in the Chest Medicine Fairbanks Distance Series, presented by Raven Cross Country, will be Sunday, February 21 at 11AM.  It will be a 15Km Classic + 15Km Free Skiathlon, with a 15Km Classic option for those wanting to race a shorter distance.
