Lathrop's Pat Nugent and West Valley's Marisa Rorabaugh were the winner's in Saturday's fourth and final event in the 14th Annual Flint Hills Resources Town Race Series, the Kendall Auto of Fairbanks/Subaru Skiathlon.
The weather was perfect, with temperatures in the high single digits and low teens, and a bright sun that hadn't been seen at a race at Birch Hill since mid November. One hundred fifty-six skiers finished the event. Nearly 100 of the skiers earned t-shirts recognizing their participation in the series. After the first 3Km of classic skiing, Hannah Boyer led West Valley teammate Marisa Rorabaugh by a couple of seconds. The two skied together for the whole 3Km skating leg, and Rorabaugh nosed out Boyer by less than a boot-length for the win 19:58.4 to 19:58.7. West Valley swept the first three places, with Eliza Rorabaugh(21:08.8) third. Maria Bray won the 30-39 women's class and was fourth overall (21:15.3) and Karin Gillis won the 40-49 women's class in fifth overall (21:20.9). Kiana Hamlin won the junior girls class in 26:40.7. The men's 8Km (4Km classic + 4Km skating) was a bit tighter at the front of the field during the first lap. Wyatt Mayo of Team FAST led the pack into the exchange area, with Pat Nugent second, Vanya Rybkin (WVHS) third, Stefan Hajdukovich (LHS) fourth, Cody Priest (AKSR) fifth and Dave Arvey (OIA) sixth. After the exchange, Nugent and Hajdukovich quickly passed Mayo and put a comfortable cushion on him and the rest of the field, placing 1-2 in 23:08.8 and 23:19.2. Priest (first in 20-29 men, 23:48.9) overtook Mayo (first in junior men, 23:58.8) in the last couple of kilometers to claim third. Arvey (first in 30-39, 24:07.2) ended up fourth and Rybkin fifth (24:10.6). Joel Buth won the 40-49 men's class in 26:26.3, Dave Edic won the 50-59 class in 24:22.5, and Owen Hanley classic skied the whole way to win the 60-69 class in 35:02.1. In Region 6 High School competition, West Valley won the girls' race, sweeping the first four places and making a total time of 1:22:45.6, to 1:30:14.5 for Lathrop and 1:42:35.3 for North Pole. Lathrop boys placed 1-2-5-6 to win the team title by 3:48 with a time of 1:38:04 to 1:41:52 for West Valley and 2:19:38.4 for North Pole. Elementary and junior high winners were: K-1-2 1Km, Maggie Druckenmiller and Ethan Hamlin; Grade 3-4 1.5Km, Amber Hajdukovich and Kent Yoshikawa; Grade 5-6 2Km, Amber Lenze and Joe Bue, Grade 7-8 3Km, Sam Hiltenbrand and Jade Hajdukovich. Below are class results in text format, and below them are overall results for the high school and adult race including leg times and leg ranks. Next weekend the Besh Cup series comes to Fairbanks for races #5 and #6, which will determine who makes the Alaska teams to the 2010 Junior Olympics in Presque Isle, Maine and the 2010 Arctic Winter Games in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
