Lathrop Boys, West Valley Girls Lead Region Championships After Day 1 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 12 February 2010

The Wolfpack women and the Malemute men are on top of the team rankings after the first day of the 2010 Region 6 Cross Country Skiing Championships.  Lathrop's Logan Hanneman and West Valley's Marisa Rorabaugh were the individual champions.

The weather couldn't have been any nicer than it was for the race which was held under bright sunshine with temperatures in the mid-to-high 20's.

The action got underway at 3:00 with the girls 7.5Km classic technique, mass start event.  Marisa Rorabaugh and WV teammate Hannah Boyer immediately bolted to the front and had a comfortable gap over the rest of the field with in first 1.5Km.  The two skied stride-for-stride for nearly the whole race, with Rorabaugh leading when there was only one track, and the two skiing side-by-side when there wer two tracks.

Behind the lead pair, West Valley's Eliza Rorabaugh and Elizabeth Whisenhant were skiing in a group of four skiers with Lathrop's Megan Edic and North Pole's Christi Schmitz.  The four traded places for several kilometers before Whisenhant started drifting off the back.

As the leaders climbed back up to the start from the biathlon range, Marisa Rorabaugh was able to gap Boyer and win by about 10 seconds.  Eliza Rorabaugh, meanwhile won the battle for third by six seconds after a strong challenge by Edic, with Schmitz only 11 seconds adrift of Edic at the finish.

Mikayla Hamlin (L), Kim Fitzgerald (L), Claire Ferree (L), Ema Mayo (WV) and Sarah Jackson (WV) rounded out the top 10.

Unlike the girls race where there was some suspense about who would win, Logan Hanneman eliminated all doubt within the first kilometer, opening up a substantial gap which only grew throughout the race.  The real excitement took place in the first group behind Hanneman, where Lathrop's Stefan Hajdukovich and Pat Nugent and West Valley's Wyatt Mayo and Vanya Rybkin duked it out within that quartet throughout the first lap.

Shortly after the second lap started, some nausea caught up with Pat Nugent who subsequently dropped off that group and fell several places.  Mayo and Hajdukovich swapped leads a few times, but Rybkin never let them get too far away.  In the end it came down to the final climb to the stadium from the range, with Mayo building a big enough margin that was enough to hold off a hard-charging Hajdukovich over the final 200m and preserve a 1.6 second difference.

Rybkin lost ground on the hill and was 22 seconds back of Hajdukovich.  Kyle Hanson of Lathrop skied a smart and steady race to place 5th, an excellent effort for a J2-aged skier on a difficult 10Km course.  James Leder (WV), Kipp Wilkinson (L), Riley Troyer, Kuba Grzeda and Bobby Signor (all WV) placed sixth through tenth.  Matt Stoller and Gavin DeWilde led North Pole in 23rd and 24th places.

After placing 1-2-3-6, West Valley has a substantial lead of nearly seven minutes in the women's event.  Lathrop faces a huge task in overcoming that lead.

Lathrop's boys have a 2:52 lead over West Valley, which is a little more doable, but still a difficult task.
